there is to be a fight club multiplayer mode however im not sure if its local multiplayer or online..

MilkChicken01 is right. The game is in principle a single player stealth adventure. It also has multiplayer mode where you can select a character and play against a friend in boxing offline (i.e. not Xbox Live)

When you say select a character, does that mean you can become one of the cast members like Michael Scofield for example? Or are they just random game characters?

No not random game characters. In the versus mode you can select from a list of the key characters in the game (Paxton, Abruzzi, Scofield to name a few)
